Prioritization in Humanitarian Demining: The United Kingdom and Switzerland allocate funds for a pilot project

The governments of the United Kingdom and Switzerland are allocating funds to support a project focused on prioritization in humanitarian demining. This initiative is being implemented based on the platform of the technology company Palantir, which specializes in big data analytics. This was announced at the Conference on Demining Activities in Ukraine (UMAC-2024), taking place this year in Lausanne, Switzerland.

The allocated funds will support a pilot project in the Kharkiv region. It allows testing the overall logic and the prioritization algorithm developed by the Ukrainian team within a single area.

"Prioritization is one of the important processes in building a comprehensive system for demining activities. Based on a large array of data processed by AI, we will be able to identify which areas should be demined first. I am pleased that we are moving quite quickly in establishing this process: just this spring, we signed a memorandum with Palantir, and today we are discussing the launch of the pilot project. I thank our partners for their support and am confident that this is a two-way process — the technology we have developed and improved can be used by other countries facing the issue of landmines," said Yulia Svyrydenko, the First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy of Ukraine.

After signing the project financing agreement, Ukrainian teams will have three months to test the prioritization system, and if any inconsistencies will be detected, they will be corrected. After successful testing, the project will be scaled up to ten regions affected by the hostilities.

"Effective information management is a crucial element of Ukraine's new National Strategy for Demining Activities. The Palantir platform can serve as the foundation for creating a rapid and effective mechanism for determining demining priorities in Ukraine based on numerous data sources. The results of the pilot project should provide answers on whether to implement the prioritization system at the national level and in what way," stated in a joint statement of Switzerland and Great Britain.

The Ministry of Economy of Ukraine, the Center for Humanitarian Demining, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, and Palantir are working on signing a contract to implement the three-month pilot project in the Kharkiv region.

Since the full-scale invasion began, the company — in collaboration with the government — has launched several projects in Ukraine. Among them is assistance in humanitarian demining. The relevant partnership agreement was signed between the Ministry of Economy of Ukraine and Palantir on March 3, 2024.
